Imagine you’re at a business networking event. In the process you meet a prospect. You exchange cards and they say they’ll check out your website and for you to call him tomorrow.
It’s exciting when you encounter prospect that has a need for what you’re offering. It’s not so exciting when you call the next day and they say; “I tried going to your website with my phone but couldn’t read it. Call back tomorrow?” This might not kill the deal, but you just invited them to check out the competition.
Prospects Don’t Come Easy –
Or cheap if you’re using paid traffic. So if you’re not mobile you’re wasting traffic, money and you’re telling your prospect to check out your competition! Consider a few hard numbers. First if your not mobile you run the risk of: 1) not being recommended, 2) people turning to your competitors site and 3) basically getting on a prospects doodooooo list. App Users Are Your Future Customers
- A New Report from Strategy Analytics shows 200 million mobile workers will be using mobile business apps in 2013.

Ultimately however the best evidence is just to look around you. Mobile phone use is everywhere. It’s the world we live in and you have to adapt for your business to survive and thrive and you better have a solution that presents your information quickly, because if you don’t you’re encouraging them them to leave. Why do that? Don’t make them hunt and peck. A mobile solution should make it easy for your prospects to take the action you want.
The Best Way to Go Mobile
Most of the talk about mobile revolves around “Responsive” design. This means the site responds to the display characteristics of the device. This is not the only way, or best way to go mobile. The screenshot on the left is how the customers site currently resolves on my phone. It’s responsive. The screenshot on the right uses a web app. Looks just like an app they’d get of the app store! Which would you prefer? Which of the two. do you think you’re prospects might prefer?
The problem with responsive design is that it enforces vertical scrolling. This means it could take time for people to find what they want and if your site as is doesn’t work well for the desktop then don’t expect it to work better with mobile users, it won’t. Mobile responsive design has a useful place but in our opinion for most businesses just because content fits on a phone or a mobile device means nothing. Making prospects vertically scroll for content is not respectful of their time. It’s a risky strategy.
HTML5 Mobile Web App
From a user interface point of view, an HTML5 mobile web app is indistinguishable from an app you would download from the iTunes, or Google/Play app stores and because it’s a familiar interface it’s easy to use.
- No Scrolling: Content represented by a tab. No scrolling. Content is found fast and you’ll notice the 3 buttons on the front for “Call Us”, “Directions”.
- Viralness: Notice the “Tell a Friend” on the front of the app as well. You want to make it easy for your fans to spread your goodness with their friends. Don’t you?
- Design: You can design specifically for the mobile prospect. and
- Ease of Use: You are presenting your website using an interface people are already familiar with. People can get in, get out and get on their way.
Native Mobile App
A native mobile app is an app that is downloaded from the Google/Play or Apple iTunes store and so if you’re considering a strategy for your business you should also consider this option because of the amount of traffic. The key point to be made is this. There is a difference between the Apple and the Google crowd. It’s not necessary that you don’t have your app in both places and because Apple is more stringent about what they’ll approve your app may not qualify for the Apple app store anyway. They don’t approve every app that gets submitted.

Every business has different needs and circumstances but the best advice I can give you is to get mobile as fast as you can, Otherwise you’re wasting traffic, money and telling your prospects to go away. The simple plan is get a web app as soon as you can.
